David Lynch Interview Project

June 18th, 2009

David Lynch is one of the reason I am who I am today. His masterpiece, Eraserhead, is responsible for a small portion of the electrified dark matter that gnaws hungrily at my brain. Very few artists can get away with what he does and also make a career out of it. But there are many of you out there who do not particularly care for Mister Lynch and his nightmare worlds. That’s cool. I understand (well, actually I don’t understand, but I’m trying to be supportive). Regardless of what you think of his films, I believe everyone can find something very worthwhile in his latest experiment.

The David Lynch Interview Project is a 20,000 mile cross-country road trip around America. The journey lasted over 70 days, and along the way Lynch and his team interviewed hundreds of people they found on the side of the road, in bars, diners, gas stations, etc. Every three days a new interview is posted. It’s amazing (especially in this vomit-soaked day of “reality” television) to watch real people simply talk about themselves and their life. It’s moving to hear about their real struggles. Meeting people without leaving home. Different backgrounds and philosophies. But no matter who the subject or what the opinion of that subject might be, one thing remains consistent; a connection to each other. A common ground that lies behind our eyes, our sighs of disappointment and our squeals of victory.

Rated T – Bad Boy Bubby

June 17th, 2009

Bad Boy Bubby is a film I feel is extremely important to both its audience and the art of cinema, but one that gets very little attention, most likely do to its experimental nature. If only it were still the 70′s! I feel a film like this would get a bit more attention if it were. The time when filmmakers risky and personal visions were considered sellable product. Ah, to dream of paradise. But look, seriously, see this movie. Filmmaker Rolf De Heer explores the human condition using a 35 year old man who has been locked up in his shit-hole apartment his entrie life. Kept prisoner by his mother, Bubby knows very little of what goes on in the outside world. When his father returns for the first time since his birth, Bubby is forced out on to the streets to discover what living is really all about. What follows is an amazing journey of a man with no preconceived ideas of what it is to be a good person. Nicholas Hope does an outstanding job portraying Bubby and makes us understand the character even when he ignorantly does some of the most awful of things. There are so many scenes in which I would love to talk about, but I always find it annoying when I read about stuff like that and haven’t yet seen the film. What I would rather do is push you to see this movie and then open up your own dialog about it.

WARNING: Bubby is not a film for people who are offended easily. It takes a very serious look at what shapes and molds us as people. Our ideals, philosophies and religious fantatisism.  If you are not interested in having a mirror held up to your face then please stay away. Bubby is an experience, and not always a pleasant one. But please know that it is richly hilarious in a lot of its execution. Sometimes the truth about us silly humans is quite funny.

Rated T: The Dark Backward

June 10th, 2009

I found Adam Rifkin’s, The Dark Backward, like I found most the odd movies I love today; staying up late as a child and flipping through the plethora of channels beamed to me from space. All it would take is an interesting visual to flash by the screen and I would put the remote down and let the madness in. Imagine with me now that you are me, devouring all things dark and different, and you happen upon a movie where Judd Nelson has grown a third arm out of his back. You can be assured I am not coming out of this one dry (that was not meant to be taken as masturbation).

TDB is a very grim fairy tale about show business and the disgusting people that inhabit it. Of course that is an over-generalization, but if you are like me, an artist in the biz, you will understand that this world can be very ugly. The filmmaker uses this idea to his advantage and creates one of the foulest, grimiest and rotten worlds I have ever had the pleasure of being a part of.

I’m not a big fan of writing movie synopsis’s, so here’s the movie in a micro-nut shell. A horrible stand-up comedian grows a third arm and starts to get noticed. Boom. There ya go. That should be enough to want to eat this flick up. What’s even more amazing is the cast! Judd Nelson, Bill Paxton, James Caan, Lara Flynn Boyle, Rob Lowe and Wayne “Danke Schoen” Newton! Each actor plays a character more repulsive than the next, and it is mighty enjoyable to watch. They are let loose into the world and all seem to have a blast chewing the scenery.

The Dark Backward is one of my all time favorite under-appreciated gems. It twisted, hilarious and gross. Now go watch it.

The Rough Cuts

June 8th, 2009

Welcome to my latest project, The Rough Cuts! This is something I have been wanting to do for a long time. I’m always dying to tell people about films I love and movies people have never heard of, but I never wanted to do it on my other channels and disrupt their flow. Now I have banned together with four other members of the YouTube community to do a Monday-Friday show all about film.

I will be taking the Wednesday slot and giving you the skinny on some of the best movies nobodies ever heard of. This is going to be a lot of fun for me, as everything else I do is quite draining and takes a lot of work. With this new project I’m looking forward to kicking back a little and just enjoy myself talking about the thing I love most; kick-ass cinema! You can go over to the YouTube channel and check out everyone else who’s involved:

Rated T – Timecrimes

June 4th, 2009

For those that know me or give a couple shits, you know that I am a lover of film. One of my (oh-so-many) missions in life is to seek out amazing movies that Hollywood either ignores or simply remakes (and almost NEVER for the better), and bathe myself in their cinematic awesomeness. I would love the opportunity to share some of my favorites with you, so this week begins a series of recommendations. I’d love to hear your thoughts on these films, so feel free to use the comments below as a forum of discussion.

This weeks movie is TIMECRIMES

I recently saw this film at my neighborhood cult theatre that plays double features for $7.00. Timecrimes (yes, it’s one word) is one of those time travel movies that sits your brain down and hands it several pieces of a very webby puzzle. It’s a story that unfolds 4 different times, each revealing an extra layer of the characters most bizarre journey, which is to manipulate himself (his own physical other self) into doing things to his future selfs advantage. It asks a common question of most time travel stories, “can we fix the past?” But what Timecrimes does so successfully is tell a very suspenseful and engaging story on mere peanuts of a budget.

Now here’s where I will lose some people…it’s a foreign film. RUN!!! SUBTITLES!! NOOO!!! EYES…BLEEDING! The rest of you still with me? Great. The film was shot in Spain by filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo. I first saw his work in a series of short films. His storytelling and visual style struck an immediate chord in me, so I sought out Timecrimes when I heard it was released. This is the kind of film that will have you thinking for days. You’ll be clawing at loopholes but then later filling them in.

Sadly, I feel that it suffers from a very unfortunate title (as well as cover art). Timecrimes sounds like cheesy science fiction movie loaded with some amazingly awful CGI and starring Jean-Claude Van Damme (wait, that was Time Cop). And the artwork doesn’t give you much more to go on. Scissors, a clock, a man with his head wrapped? The movie is far to clever for both of these set backs. Ah well.

Timecrimes is currently available on DVD, so I highly recommend you rent it. If you enjoy movies that are different from the blockbuster fare and make you think as well as excite you, then check out this flick and tell me what you thought. But hurry! They are already REMAKING it in the States! God forbid we come up with something interesting on our own.

The Tiger Lillies

May 28th, 2009

Allow me to introduce you to a band that I am sure a good majority of you have never heard of. They are currently one of my favorites and deserve more attention…but since they are weird as shit I’m sure they’ll never get it. I discovered The Tiger Lillies when I was looking for songs to inspire me as I prepared to shoot my last movie, Lo. Since the movie was a comedic love story about demons, I was looking for upbeat songs dealing with Hell…and I found exactly that. The iTunes Store search engine brought up Tiger Lillies. I clicked on it. I listened. When it ended I knew immediately that this song  would go over the end credits of my movie. It was beyond perfect. I then checked out more songs from the band and fell in love.

The Tiger Lillies are a three-piece band, based in London. Their music has a surreal quality and has been described as darkly humorous, Brechtian, gypsy cabaret. The leader of the trio, Martyn Jacques, used to live above a brothel, and so most of the songs he writes deal with pimps, prostitutes and drug addiction. His voice (when just listening for the first time) will fool you into thinking he is a cracked out woman. His usual performance make-up is that of a ghost-like clown or skeleton. Adrian Huge handles the percussion while Adrian Stout lends his bass and saw to the mix.

If you’re in the mood for some truly different music to feed that dark jester inside you, then I highly recommend checking out an album or two.

Shelf Life

May 21st, 2009

I am not against the digital revolution. I adore the resources available  to artists and the fact that I can make a feature film for $1,000. That being said, I want to talk about two specific things that are being morosely affected by this new age. Books and DVDs.

I will break this down into three reasons, and when I’m done you can all nod or shake your heads. After that we’ll get on with the future. Deal?

1. The artwork

Amazon in recent years has introduced us to its digital book, the Kindle. While I agree this thing is nifty and space-age-riffic , it’s also cold and impersonal. One of the greatest joys of any book is the wonderfully ecelctic and unique cover art. To me this adds to the experience of the story. It sets a tone and gives it personality. When I look back on the books I have read, one of the first things that comes to mind is the artwork that graced the cover. Anyone read Stephen Kings, Night Shift? The cover with the hand and all the eyeballs poking out of the skin? “Holy alien dimmension, Christian Bale!” That thing was the center of awesome town! DVDs play a tad differently for me in this catagory. There are a shit-ton of great movie cover arts, but it seems in recent years studios lost the love for good imagery and have opted instead for how many movie stars can they cram onto a cover. But let’s be honest, a good movie poster is a good fucking movie poster.

2. The collection

I am proud of my movies, damn it, and I want to show those ladies off. If you come over to my place and I catch you scanning over my DVDs then I am going to get a bit excited. Movies are important to me and I enjoy watching people run their fingers down my lovers. Everyone does it. You check out your friends flicks. Silently judge him or her on their choices and taste.  Same with books. My mother fuckin’ stuff is on display. What I do NOT give two shits about is my collection on a hard drive or kindle. That, to me, is dull. I do not want to sit down at my television and scroll through my movies. NO! I want to stand in front of them. Say, “good morning, good afternoon, good evening and goodnight”. Study their spines, savor the taste of each one…and then, pull the perfect selection from the shelf…which leads me to-

3. The feel

This. Is. Everything. Fuck the Kindle with its spineless back and plastic smell. I don’t know exactly why I like a good book making love to my hands, but here is the only way I can desribe it. Feeling the bulk. Turning the pages. Smelling the paper. Bookmarking my progress. A book in your hands is more than just a story. It brings a sort of comfort. It individualizes the artist and their message. It is a piece of art. There is a great sense of accomplishment when you finish the last page of a book and then CLOSE IT. Soemthing you will never feel or achive with a Kindle. I once finished a book in which I had tears in my eyes. I held the book in my hands and stared at the art work. I felt the weight and the pages, recalling the adventure I just went on. I opened it back up and read the last page. There was no list of other stories to choose from, only this one. The one that affected me this way. My friend, the physical book.

So there’s all that. I won’t be laying down on the tracks of the future because I know that train will not stop for me. I love the technology, but I will be sad to see books and DVDs slowly vanishing.

Ink

May 18th, 2009

It’s very rare these days that I’ll see a trailer for a movie and fall head over heels in love. But after seeing the images from Jamin Winans’s, INK, I immediately purchased tickets to the special screening at the Egyptian in Hollywood (June 10th). In an interview I read with the directer, he describes it as Snow White meets Nine Inch Nails. Sold! Watch the trailer and tell me you don’t think this looks refreshing for once.
