The Tiger Lillies
Allow me to introduce you to a band that I am sure a good majority of you have never heard of. They are currently one of my favorites and deserve more attention…but since they are weird as shit I’m sure they’ll never get it. I discovered The Tiger Lillies when I was looking for songs to inspire me as I prepared to shoot my last movie, Lo. Since the movie was a comedic love story about demons, I was looking for upbeat songs dealing with Hell…and I found exactly that. The iTunes Store search engine brought up Tiger Lillies. I clicked on it. I listened. When it ended I knew immediately that this song would go over the end credits of my movie. It was beyond perfect. I then checked out more songs from the band and fell in love.
The Tiger Lillies are a three-piece band, based in London. Their music has a surreal quality and has been described as darkly humorous, Brechtian, gypsy cabaret. The leader of the trio, Martyn Jacques, used to live above a brothel, and so most of the songs he writes deal with pimps, prostitutes and drug addiction. His voice (when just listening for the first time) will fool you into thinking he is a cracked out woman. His usual performance make-up is that of a ghost-like clown or skeleton. Adrian Huge handles the percussion while Adrian Stout lends his bass and saw to the mix.
If you’re in the mood for some truly different music to feed that dark jester inside you, then I highly recommend checking out an album or two.
